For his third birthday party, my son requested a Back to the Future theme. To that end, I created invitations and party decorations that featured Marty, Doc Brown, the DeLorean, and other BTTF-related items using materials I had collected years back and some images that I found on the Internet. Thanks to some Photoshop magic, we used almost no store-bought decorations.

The two-sided invitation was the most fun to create. For the front side, I swiped the logo from a Back to the Future Part II VHS tape cover and modified it from "Part II" to read "Birthday Party for II" since the party was for both my son and me. The DeLorean came from an advertisment, and Doc and Marty came from a Back to the Future comic book.

The back side of the invitation is based on the popular Advance Poster A for Back to the Future Part II. I imagine most people have an old copy lying around somewhere. I wanted to evoke the moment in Back to the Future when the license plate flies off the back of the DeLorean. The license plate element is based on an actual California license plate that I found online and heavily manipulated; note, for example, that the tags reflect the date of the party: March 5, 2000.

The "Save the Clock Tower" flyer was a cheap party decoration. I found a picture of the actual prop newspaper used in the movie and re-created the flyer based on pausing the movie and analyzing its elements. I printed several on blue paper (true to the film) and passed them out at the party, encouraging people to place their contribution in the "Save the Clock Tower" donations can I made. Unfortunately, I didn't get many takers.
