Custom Action Figures
Creation, Photography

"When you don't like what you are given, make it better." This quote is from a band of online action figure customizers who literally tear up their toys to make new ones. I got into this with my wife Leslie several years ago. We bought toy action figures, ripped them apart, glued them back together, added clay and paint and other stuff, and created brand new toys. This turned out to be Leslie's first step in a professional sculpturing career.

I collaborated with Leslie on the execution of many of her figures (she calls me her Art Director), but I only claim actual creation credit on the three below. Note that the photos shown are actually direct scans that have been cleaned up with Photoshop; these pictures pre-date the digital camera.

Jonny Quick
Tarantula + Quicksilver =

Jonny Quick

My first custom action figure was a bad guy. Jonny Quick is the super-speedster of the Crime Syndicate of America. This figure was the only one that I completed totally solo. I put the head of Tarantula (pictured doing the hokey-pokey above) on the body of Quicksilver. I had help on my next two figures.

Lex Luthor
Lex Luthor + Two-Face =

Lex Luthor

Though he is routinely portrayed as a corrupt businessman in a dark suit in both the comics and on television, for some reason Superman's arch-enemy Lex Luthor was rarely seen that way in plastic. To create a more modern take, I placed the head of a goofy-looking "cyber-suit Lex" onto the smart-dressed body of Two-Face. Leslie helped with the white shirt and eyebrows, but the rest is my work.

The Flash

Batman

+ Nightwing =

The Flash

My last figure was the Flash, the fastest man alive. Leslie and I contributed equally to this figure, our first real collaboration. We used the "ready for action" legs of Batman with the young-looking Nightwing to create The Flash as seen on the Superman animated series.

One interesting note: the Flash's earpieces are made of paper clips. During this period of time, I discovered that I had a knack for creating things out of paper clips. I have not yet found a way to parlay this talent into a revenue stream, but I have not given up hope.
